From a building permit to plumbing, electrical and mechanical work
In Austin, electrical and plumbing permits usually arrive within a month of a building permit; mechanical work follows later. Each trade gets a different window.
The useful question for every trade
A building permit is not an HVAC lead. It is an earlier public event from which each trade has its own observable timeline. We include every Austin building-permit number base, including those that never receive a later trade permit. A target must be issued strictly after the building permit.
All Austin building permits, through 19 September 2026
| Target trade | Within 30 days | Within 90 days | Within 180 days | Within 365 days | Median days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | 22.4% | 35.2% | 41.3% (n=95,241) | 45.3% | 27 |
| Electrical | 22.9% | 40.0% | 47.7% (n=96,412) | 51.8% | 33 |
| Mechanical | 8.4% | 19.3% | 30.0% (n=97,832) | 37.9% | 68 |

Evidence and limits
Type of work, property class and declared value are read from the building permit, before any later trade outcome. Records without a full observation window are excluded. This describes permit timing in one jurisdiction; it does not prove a particular scope, availability or opportunity. Direct answer
Our analysis uses the public records and sample shown below to measure a historical pattern, not to predict one future job with certainty. The answer is useful only with its jurisdiction, sample and time horizon attached; therefore each result should guide research priority and be verified against the issuing authority before commercial action.
How to use this research
These results are descriptive measurements from the stated records, market and observation window. Use them to choose what to investigate first, then verify an individual project with the issuing authority. A historical result is not a guarantee of a future permit, award or hiring decision.
Conclusion
The practical value is a narrower and more explainable research queue. The evidence is strongest when its jurisdiction, sample and horizon remain attached to the claim; that is why Projects Ahead does not turn local measurements into a single national score.
